Jacques Offenbach, German-born French composer, 1878. Offenbach (1819-1880) is regarded as one of the pioneers of the operetta. His operettas, which included Orpheus in the Underworld and La Belle Helene were very popular in both the French and English speaking worlds in the 1850s and 1860s.
