Baron James de Rothschild. 1867. James Mayer de Rothschild (1792-1868) founded the French branch of the Rothschild banking empire, Rothschild Freres, in Paris in 1817. Financing the building of the French railway network and mining enterprises, he became one of the richest men in the world.
