Joseph Gallieni, French general, 1899. Joseph Simon Gallieni (1849-1916) was a French soldier, most active as a military commander and administrator in the French colonies, who came out of retirement to serve in the First World War. He has been credited with playing a decisive role in halting the German advance at the Battle of the Marne in 1914. At the time of this photograph he was serving as Governor of Madagascar.
