Dr TW Evans, American dentist and biographer of Napoleon III, 19th century. Thomas Wiltberger Evans first treated Louis-Napoleon, the future Emperor Napoleon III, but then President of the french Second Republic, in 1850. He became the Emperor's official dentist and was the first American to be admitted to the Legion d'Honneur. In 1870 after the defeat of Napoleon's army at Sedan and the ensuing overthrow of the Second Empire, Evans was instrumental in ensuring the escape of the Empress Eugenie to exile in England. He wrote an account of Napoleon's reign in his Memoirs of Dr Thomas W Evans: the Second French Empire.
