Alexandre Dumas the Younger, French playwright and novelist, 1884. Dumas's (1824-1895) novel La dame aux camelias (The Lady of the Camellias) was the basic story for Giuseppe Verdi's opera 'La Traviata' (1853). Dumas also adapted the story into a successful play.
