Jules Grevy, President of France, 1880. Grevy (1807-1891) was President ot the French Third Republic from 1879-1887. A leading Opportunist Republican, he is widely regarded as the first true republican President of France, as his predecessors were monarchists whose unrealised ideal was the restoration of the French monarchy.
