Louise Michel, French schoolteacher, medical worker and anarchist, 1899. Louise Michel (1830-1905) was active in the Paris Commune and as a result was deported to New Caledonia in 1873, returning to France in 1880 after the Communards were granted an amnesty by the government. She continued to preach revolution and was impisoned for three years on two occasions, as well as spending a period in exile in England. Still touring France making speeches advocating the anarchist cause, she died in her hotel room in Paris in 1905. Her funeral drew huge crowds. In 1946 a station on the Paris Metro was named after her. A photograph from Album de Photographies dans L'Intimite de Personnages Illustres, 1855-1915, 8th album, Editions MD, Paris.
