Charles Baudelaire, French poet and art critic, 1857. Baudelaire (1821-1867) was an influential but controversial Symbolist poet who was interested in satanism and the macabre. His book of poems, Les Fleurs du Mal (The Flowers of Evil) (1857) is regarded as one of the classics of French literature.
