Victor Schoelcher, French anti-slavery campaigner, 1880. Schoelcher (1804-1893) campaigned tirelessly in the 1830s and 1840s for the abolition of slavery in France's colonies. His objective was achieved when slavery was abolished by the French government in 1848.
