Traditional terraced housing, Albert Road, Kilnhurst, South Yorkshire, 1959. In a photograph commissioned by the Swinton Urban District Council in South Yorkshire, a communal back yard can be seen belonging to properties scheduled for demolition in 1959. These were typical of the kind of 'pit houses' which existed in the North of England which were gradually demolished to make way for more modern urban developments.
