John Stuart Mill, British philosopher and social reformer, 19th century (1956). An advocate of utilitarianism, Mill (1806-1873) was probably the most influential liberal thinker of the 19th century. A Liberal Member of Parliament, he campaigned for women's rights extension of suffrage, proportional representation in elections and reform of British rule in Ireland.
