Deism: Lord Herbert of Cherbury, c1603-1605 (1956). Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury (1583-1648) was a British soldier, diplomat, poet, historian and religious philosopher. He wrote a history of the reign of Henry VIII. His major philosophical work is De Veritate, which deals with the nature of Truth. From the National Portrait Gallery, London.
