Casualties from the front pass destroyed tanks, Villers-Bretonneux, France, World War I, 1918. Villers-Bretonneux was the scene of the first tank battle in history, on 24th April 1918. The town was captured by Australian troops on 25th April, at the cost of over 1200 lives, a sacrifice honoured by an Australian war memorial built there in 1919. Stereoscopic card detail.
