Dead soldiers, Vimy Ridge, France, World War I, 1914-1918. Vimy Ridge was the site of an attack by the Canadian Corps on three divisions of the German 6th Army in April 1917. The Canadians succeeded in taking the ridge but suffered 10,602 casualties (3598 dead and 7004 wounded). Four Canadian soldiers were awarded the Victoria Cross for their actions in the battle.
