Samuel Arnold, member of the Lincoln conspiracy, 1865(1955). Arnold (1834-1906) was involved in two unsuccessful attempts to kidnap US President Abraham Lincoln with the intention of holding him for ransom in exchange for the release of Confederate prisoners of war. He dropped out of the conspiracy before it resulted in Lincoln's assassination, but was arrested on suspicion of complicity. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, but was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson in 1869 and released.
