St Veronica, mid 15th century (1958). According to Christian legend, Veronica encountered Jesus on the Via Dolorosa and paused to wipe the sweat from his face with her veil. When she did this, his face was imprinted on the cloth. She is said to have taken the veil, which had miraculous properties, to Rome to present it to the Emperor Tiberius. A print from The Fitzwilliam Museum an Illustrated Survey, Trianon Press, 1958.
