'Portrait of a Man on Crutches', c1710 (1958). Red chalk on white paper. Likely a portrait of Watteau's friend, the journalist Antoine de la Roque, who had one of his legs amputated below the knee after it was shattered by a cannonball at the Battle of Malplaquet in 1709.
