Dragon tree, La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain, 2009. This species of tree (Dracaena draco) is native to the Canary Islands. When the bark or leaves are cut, a red resin is secreted. It was used by the Romans in alchemy and was believed in ancient times to be the dried blood of dragons, hence the tree's name.
