Claude de Lorraine, 1st Duke of Guise, 16th century (1882-1884). Claude (1496-1550) distinguished himself as a soldier fighting in the Italian Wars. He was made the first Duke of Guise by King Francis I when he returned to France in 1528 from his captivity at the hands of the Emperor Charles V. This made the Guises extremely powerful as they claimed precedence over the Bourbon princes of Conde and Conti.
