Houses on the Brodbankengasse, Danzig, c1922. When Poland regained its independence after World War I, Danzig was given the status of a Free City by the League of Nations due to its overwhelmingly German population. The city's population favoured re-unification with Germany and Danzig's status was a major source of tension between Poland and Germany after the Nazis came to power in 1933. A print from Peoples of all Nations, Volume III, edited by JA Hammerton, The Fleetway House, London, c1922.
