Mission San Fernando and Father Junipero Serra statue, Los Angeles, California, USA, 1956. Vintage postcard. The Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana was founded in 1797 by a Spanish Catholic priest, Father Fermin Lasuen. It was sold in 1846 and the buildings were used for a variety of uses before being restored to religious use in the 1940s, largely thanks to a donation from the Hearst Foundation. Father Junipero Serra (1713-1784) was a Spanish Franciscan friar who established a series of Catholic missions in Alta California from 1769 onwards.
