The palaestra at Olympia, Greece. The palaestra, erected during the 3rd century BC, was used for the practice of wrestling, boxing and long jumping. It was roughly square in shape, with a peristyle court, and was surrounded by covered areas sectioned into various rooms. Much of the colonnade surrounding the central court has been reconstructed. Olympia, a sanctuary of ancient Greece, is probably best known for having been the site of the Olympic Games in classical times.
