The shield of the Solis family, Solis Mansion (Casa del Sol, House of the Sun), Caceres, Spain, 2007. This mansion was originally a 15th century fortress. In 1549 the owner at the time, Francisco de Solis, had the house renovated by the stoneworker Perez Gomez. The renovation work included the construction of the doorway and the inner staircase. The doorway has a semi-circular arch composed of large voussoirs. Above it, a molding frames the shield of the Solis family, on which appears a sun with eight serpent heads biting the rays. The shield is crowned by a helmet. In the upper section of the facade, between two windows, there is a projecting defensive machicolated battlement with arrow-slits.
