The amphitheatre at Merida, Spain, 2007. The amphitheatre at Medina was built in 8 BC and could accommodate 15,000 spectators. It could be flooded so that ships could sail in and naval battles could be fought. After gladiatorial contests were banned, material from the amphitheatre was used for repairing t the bridge over the Guadiana. Merida was founded by the Romans in 25 BC, under the name of Augusta Emerita, as a colony for veterans of the Vth and Xth Legions.
