A columbarium in Merida, Spain, 2007. A columbarium is a place for the respectful and usually public storage of cinerary urns (i.e., urns holding a deceased’s cremated remains). Merida was founded by the Romans in 25 BC, under the name of Augusta Emerita, as a colony for veterans of the Vth and Xth Legions.
