Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo (Our Lady of the Cape), Cape Espichel, Portugal, 2009. The church was originally a fortress, but was later transformed into a sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of the Cape. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared here to an elderly couple in 1410. The church was designed by architect Joao Antunes and was built in 1701 in the Baroque style. Being a pilgrimage destination, it was flanked by a series of buildings that provided and cared for the pilgrims. A small 15th-century Ermida da Memoria (Chapel of Memory) can be seen not far from the sanctuary. Its interior is covered in 18th century tile panels featuring the legend of the Lady of the Cape.
