Strategem of Lord Fauconberg at the Battle of Towton, Yorkshire, 1461 (1864). Lord Fauconbridge (1410-1463), leading the vanguard of Edward IV's (1422-1483) Yorkist army, orders his archers to shoot volleys of arrows and then retire. The battle, the largest and bloodiest to be fought on British soil, was a resounding victory for the Yorkists over the Lancastrian army.
