Cathedral view through an arch, Cathedral of Évora, Portugal. Evora, capital of Alto Alentejo, is surrounded by its fortress walls. The cathedral of Evora was built in a solid Romanesque style beginning in 1186. According to local legend, the fleet of Vasco de Gama had their flags blessed here in 1497. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
