The main portal of the Cathedral of Evora, Portugal, 2009. The 12 apostles in the main portal, which recall similar designs at Notre Dame de Paris and Chartres Cathedral in France, are considered masterpieces of Portuguese Gothic sculpture. Construction of the Romanesque Cathedral of Evora began in 1186. According to local legend, the fleet of Vasco de Gama had their flags blessed here in 1497. The Historic Centre of Evora was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.
