The ruins at Milreu are among the most important remains of the Roman presence in the Algarve and now form an imposing archaeological site, which has been classified as a national monument. The ruins consist of a manor house, farm buildings, a wine press, baths and a temple - a centre for private worship dedicated to the theme of the various water-based activities - which was built in the 4th century to satisfy the pleasures of the Romans. In addition to this, two mausoleums can be seen along with a peristyle with 22 columns, alongside an open courtyard with a garden and its attendant water tank.
