Mrs Janet M Cole and Miss Hazel Philip campaigning for Votes for Women, Chicago, Illinois, USA, 1905. Women finally secured the right to vote throughout the United States in 1920 with the passing of the Nineteenth Amendement to the US Constitution. Illinois granted women the right to vote in presidential elections in 1913, making it the first state east of the Mississippi to do so.
