David Alfred Thomas appointed Food Controller, 1917. Welsh industrialist and Liberal politician David Alfred Thomas, 1st Viscount Rhondda (1856-1918) was a survivor of the sinking of the liner 'Lusitania' by a German u-boat off the Irish coast on 7 May 1915. He was appointed Minister of Food Control in June 1917 and was responsible for introducing an efficient system of rationing.
