Carrying the coffin of Alderman Terence McSwiney, Lord Mayor of Cork, 1920. Terence Joseph McSwiney (1879-1920) was a representative of Sinn Fein who was elected Lord Mayor of Cork in 1920 during the Irish War of Independence. He was arrested by the British on charges of sedition and imprisoned in Brixton jail where he died on 25 October after a 74 day hunger strike. His hunger strike and death gained the Republican cause widespread attention and support internationally. 30,000 people filed past his coffin when it lay in Southwark Cathedral and his funeral in Cork attracted huge crowds.
