Wendell Willkie, American politician, Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA, 1940. Wilkie (1892-1940) at a frontier celebration at Cheyenne during the 1940 presidential election campaign. A corporate lawyer who had never held any political office, he was a surprise choice for the Republican nomination. Wilkie campaigned against what he described as the inefficiencies and anti-business policies of the New Deal but was defeated by Democratic incumbent Franklin D Roosevelt in the election.
