King Canute and Earl Ulf quarrel over chess, Roskilde, Denmanrk, 1026 (1913). King Canute (c985-1035) was Viking King of England, Norway and Denmark. Ulf Jarl Torgilsson (c998-1026) married King Canute's sister and was appointed by Canute as the Earl of Denmark. They argued over a game of chess and Canute had Ulf murdered.
