Antoine Lavoisier, 18th century French chemist, 19th century. Among other achievements, Lavoisier (1743-1794) was one of the discoverers of oxygen, and established the laws of chemical combination. He improved the manufacture of gunpowder when director of government powder mills. He was guillotined during the French Revolution. From the original picture by Jacques-Louis David in a private collection in Paris.
