Lombard Street is famous for its switchback twists and turns which are necessary in order to enable vehicles to cope with the steepness of the slope which has a natural gradient of 27 degrees. The crooked section of the street, which is restricted to one-way traffic travelling downhill and has a speed limit of 5 mph, was laid out in 1923.
