Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, Russian microbiologist, c1900s(?). Mechnikov (1845-1916) continued the work of Louis Pasteur, specialising in the study of the immune system. He discovered phagocytes, viral cells which destroy infective bacteria, for which he shared the 1908 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Paul Ehrlich. From a private collection.
