Heinrich Schliemann, German businessman and archaeologist, 19th century. After amassing a fortune in business, Schliemann (1822-1890) retired and devoted his time to archaeology. He pioneered prehistoric Greek archaeology, excavating the traditional site of Troy four times between 1871 and 1890, Mycenae in 1876, and a number of other sites.
