Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Russian composer, as a naval cadet, 1856. Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) was a member of the group of Russian composers known as 'The Five'. He composed 15 operas, one of which, 'The Tale of Tsar Saltan', contains the piece of music for which he is most famous, 'The Flight of the Bumblebee'. He entered the Naval College in St Petersburg in 1856 and combined his musical career with one in the military, initially as a naval officer, then as an inspector of naval bands.
