Hubert Lyautey, French Army general, c1910s-c1920s(?). Lyautey (1854-1934) commanded French troops in the invasion and conquest of Madagascar in 1896-1898. He served as military governor of Morocco from 1912 until 1925. He was appointed French Minister of War in December 1916 but resigned three months later over his disagreement with General Robert Nivelle's planned Aisne campaign (the Nivelle Offensive), his resignation precipitating the fall of the government of Aristide Briand. Lyautey was made a Marshal of France in 1921. In his later years he became associated with the French fascist movement.
