Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, German army officer, c1930s-c1940s. A Catholic aristocrat, Stauffenberg (1907-1944) joined the German Army in 1930. He was one of the leading members of the failed plot of 20 July 1944 to kill Adolf Hitler and remove the Nazi Party from power in Germany. Stauffenberg was captured and executed by firing squad for his role in the plot.
