Christ Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, 1936. Vintage linen postcard showing the exterior of Christ Church, a red brick structure with a steeple. Christ Church was originally founded by Anglicans in 1695. The Georgian church that exists today was built between 1727 and 1744, with the steeple added in 1754. At the time of the steeple's completion it was the tallest building in North America. Christ Church was the site of the baptism of William Penn and members of its congregation included George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. In 1785 the church was the birthplace of the American Episcopal Church.
