Philadelphia's Municipal Stadium was built in 1925 for the 1926 Sesquicentennial International Exposition. It was home to the Philadelphia Quakers American Football team, who won the American Football League in 1926, its only year of competition. The Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL) used Municipal Stadium for a few years in the 1940s but it is best known for being the venue for the annual college football game between the Army and Navy between 1936 and 1979. In 1926 120,557 people packed the stadium to watch Gene Tunney beat Jack Dempsey to win the world heavyweight boxing championship. It was also used as a venue for pop concerts, including the American part of Live Aid in 1985. Municipal Stadium was renamed John F Kennedy Stadium in 1964. By the late 1980s the condition of the stadium was deteriorating and it was condemned in 1989 and demolished three years later. The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard was the first shipyard to be built for the US Navy, serving the Navy from 1801 until its closure in 1995.
