The Treaty of Versailles forbade Germany from building submarines, but after Hitler (1889-1945) came to power the construction of U-boats and the training of crews began as part of the wider programme of German re-armament. By the outbreak of World War II Nazi Germany was able to deploy 65 submarines. A print from Adolf Hitler.
