Adolf Hitler inspecting the first German U-boats at Kiel, Germany, August 1935. The Treaty of Versailles forbade Germany from building submarines, but after Hitler (1889-1945) came to power the construction of U-boats and the training of crews began as part of the wider programme of German re-armament.
