Golden Gate, Jerusalem, Israel. The Golden Gate is the oldest gate in the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. Standing on the site of a much earlier gate, it was probably built in the 520s during the programme of building in Jerusalem undertaken by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. According to Jewish tradition it is the gate through which the Messiah will enter Jerusalem. In order to prevent this, the Muslim Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent had the gate blocked in 1541.
