El Deir (the Monastery), Petra, Jordan, c1924. Petra was the capital of the Nabataean kingdom from 312 BC until it was absorbed into the Roman Empire in 106 AD. The city is best known for its buildings with elaborate facades cut out of the sandstone rock. Despite its name the Monastery was in fact a tomb. A print from Countries of the World, edited by JA Hammerton, first volume, The Fleetway House, London, c1924.
