Hubert Latham prepares to take off after Louis Bleriot, near Calais, France, 25 July 1909. Flying an Antoinette aircraft, French aviator Hubert Latham (1883-1912) made two unsuccessful attempts to make the first powered flight across the English Channel in July 1909. On the day of his second attempt, his compatriot Louis Bleriot achieved the first successful cross-Channel flight. A print from L'Illustration, 31 July 1909.
