Blue Star Line's cruise ship SS 'Arandora Star', Kongsfjorden, Spitzbegen, Norway, 1929. The 'Arandora Star' entered service with the Blue Star Line in 1927. Based at Southampton, she sailed to numerous destination on both sides of the Atlantic, with Norway a frequent destination. She was requisitioned after World War II broke out, and on 1 July 1940 sailed from Liverpool carrying Italian internees and prisoners of war to Newfoundland, as well as British soldiers to guard them. The following day, the 'Andora Star' was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-47 commanded by Commander Gunther Prien, with the loss of over 800 lives.
