First day's bombardment of Forts Jackson and St Philip, Louisiana, American Civil War, April 1862. First division of the Union squadron preparing for action. A Union fleet commanded by Captain David Farragut laid siege to two Confederate fotrs on the Mississippi River. The Union ships were eventually able to pass the forts, enabling the capture of New Orleans.
